President, United World Mission
John Bernard has been president of United World Mission since 2001. Prior to serving in organizational leadership, John and his wife Melinda were missionaries in Spain involved in church planting and leadership training. John also has served as local church pastor in New Hampshire.
John earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Columbia International University in 2005 with a dissertation entitled, “Training Church Planters in Vietnam.” In 1987 he earned the Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and was ordained by the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference (CCCC). John serves as elder-at-large for the Medway Village Church (Medway, MA) and as an Elder at Forest Hill Church in Charlotte, NC.
John and Melinda have been married for thirty-three years and make their home near UWM’s international office in Charlotte, NC. John and Melinda have three children and one grandchild. John’s interests include reading, golf, cycling, and avidly following the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics!
COO, United World Mission
Denny Mathews was born and raised in India in the crucible of missions where he learned first-hand lessons of faith and trust in the Lord, as he saw his pioneer parents live out their calling amidst great suffering and persecution. He moved to New York City in 1989 and graduated with honors from the City University of New York. Denny spent the next 22 years as a professional in the Financial Services sector, working in strategic roles in marquee organizations including Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Bank of America and ABN AMRO. Denny joined United World Mission as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer in 2016.
Denny married his sweetheart Bella in 1994 and they made their home near Charlotte, NC. They have 2 sons and 2 daughters. Denny serves as a teaching pastor at Steele Creek Church of Charlotte, and is currently the board treasurer of the Harold C. Smith Foundation and a director on the board of Alpha Ministries.
Denny is passionate about engaging with people and elevating them by helping them identify and operate in their areas of strength. He is intentional about infusing joy in every area of engagement. In his spare time, he loves to hang out with his wife and children and sweat it out at the EDG spin class at his gym.
CAO, United World Mission
Since 2006, Sean has helped church communities and ministries with leadership development, annual giving strategies, capital campaigns, endowment development, as well as the creation of stewardship education. He has written extensively on the topic of Christian stewardship and leadership through various publications including The Presbyterian Outlook and Duke Divinity’s Faith and Leadership. Sean is the co-author of the recently published Gracious Stewardship: Developing the Church in the Way of Jesus. He speaks at conferences, facilities workshops, and preaches in church communities. Among his favorite theological subjects to discuss are church history, practices of the early church, the sharing of resources, leadership in the Way of Jesus, grief, spiritual formation, evangelism, and the Global Church on mission.
From 2011-2017, he developed and directed the stewardship office at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC, one of the largest and most effective church stewardship offices in the United States. During these years, MPPC received its highest level of funding in its 90 year history. An ordained minister, Sean is the Chief Advancement Officer for United World Mission. He leads the advancement team in their work to accomplish two core goals: to inspire generosity and to strengthen the Global Church. Sean is currently working on a series titled “The Awakening”, which is a blog that tells of the works God is doing in the world.
Sean completed an undergraduate degree in Religious Studies and a Master of Arts in Practical Theology. He lives with his wife, Shannon, in Charlotte, NC. They have three children.
