Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I consider a partnership with Overseas Council?

Overseas Council has identified the most strategic leadership training centers in the Majority World through careful examination of leadership, curriculum, governance and institutional management. Our international partners provide a trusted pathway for strengthening the leadership and witness of the Church throughout the world.

We do not bring an agenda to our partners but rather listen to their dreams, ideas, and plans.  Our programs and projects allow donors to invest in these dreams that result in changed lives through the witness of the Church. We have nearly forty years of experience in providing strategic funding in ways that avoid unhealthy dependency and build sustainable, indigenous structures.

If you believe in the critical role of leaders, the centrality of the Church, and working through indigenous structures…a partnership through OC could help you accomplish your goals.

Why does Overseas Council only support seminaries in the Majority World and not in North America?

Overseas Council invests its energies where the Church is growing fastest or against formidable odds. We acknowledge the importance of strengthening leadership training for the Church in North America and maintain ongoing dialogue with many leading seminaries in this country.  We focus our time and resources, however, on equipping brothers and sisters around the world who lack access to training resources that are readily available in North America.

Why should I invest in leadership training?

God’s people and God’s mission depend upon godly, gifted, and equipped leaders.  Planting and pastoring churches is best accomplished by trained indigenous leaders. OC partners provide training for church planters, pastors, and missionaries in their own contexts.  Our partner schools also are centers of research and reflection, providing contextualized resources and thought leadership for the Church.

Are Majority World seminaries producing leaders who are out of touch with the needs of the Church?

That is not our experience.  OC partners with schools that have a demonstrated commitment to the Church in their context.  The vast majority of the students in our partner seminaries are already ministering in their communities so they are deeply connected to the churches they serve.  We serve with schools that value academic integrity and also value service to the Church and Christ’s mission.

If I want to be a student or faculty member at an Overseas Council partner institution and/or are requesting scholarship assistance for my studies, what is your policy?

Overseas Council provides scholarship that support individual students through the institutions in which they are enrolled as students.  Scholarship funds are provided through OC to the school, which distributes the funds for qualified students. Only Overseas Council partner institutions are eligible to receive scholarship support for their students.

If I represent an organization or ministry and want to request financial assistance, what is your policy?

Overseas Council focuses on facilitating theological education with seminaries and training programs in the Majority World.  Our partners are carefully vetted over time, and we do not share financial resources with individuals or organizations outside of this network.

If I represent a theological institution and am interested in applying to become an Overseas Council partner institution, what is your policy?

We do not consider unsolicited applications for partnership. However, if you are involved with a theological school, we welcome a brief description of your work.

Since Overseas Council is non-denominational, what Christian theological material is taught to students who attend the partner seminaries?

Overseas Council partners with institutions that affirm the essentials of evangelical, orthodox Christianity, as represented by the Lausanne Covenant and the World Evangelical Alliance Statement of Faith. Within that framework, there is much diversity in our partner institutions, including roots in Wesleyan, Reformed, Lutheran, Baptist, Pentecostal and Independent traditions.  While we seek to assist our partners in developing the most relevant, biblical curriculum to address the needs of Church and society, they determine the content based on their tradition and the contextual realities of their region.

How will Overseas Council safeguard my personal information that is provided to them with a gift or for other purely administrative purposes?

As a ministry of United World Mission, Overseas Council does not disclose the identity of any donor, unless specific authority for such is provided in writing by the donor. Our computer systems are protected by several layers of hardware and software security that prevent unauthorized access to private information.

How can I get information about Overseas Council’s revenues and how they are dispersed?

United World Mission undergoes an annual audit by an independent audit firm and also prepares an Annual Report with this information. To request a copy of the Audit or Annual Report, please contact United World Mission at +1 (704) 357-3355 or info@overseas.org.
