Ben & Lauren Lawson
We will be serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Congo Initiative.
We have the pleasure of serving with Congo Initiative at the Bilingual Christian University of the Congo (UCBC). Located in the town of Beni in the Eastern DRC, UCBC exists to cultivate future leaders in Congo who are grounded in the gospel and equipped with a strong education.
Eastern Congo has been plagued with war and violence throughout its history, leaving it undeveloped and impoverished. UCBC founder, David Kasali, says that the root of the problem is bad leadership, so he started UCBC in hopes to “prepare a new generation of leaders who are critical in their thinking and who are grounded in ethics of love your enemies and love your neighbors.”
Even though UCBC is Congolese-led they search for international partnership to utilize the skills and resources of the global church. This is why they have invited us to work as a Math and Physics Professor (Ben) and a Visit and Hospitality Coordinator (Lauren) to empower future Congolese leaders.
- For UCBC students to “be transformed to transform” (the moto of UCBC) and for the work of UCBC to cause change in Congo
- For us to learn how to excel in our new roles at UCBC, and be led by the Spirit while doing so
- For our physical, emotional, and spiritual health as we embark on this new and challenging adventure
