From the time I was saved in a Methodist revival meeting when I was 20 years old, I knew that God was calling me to some kind of full-time service. It wasn’t until Missions Emphasis Week at Taylor University that I began to consider overseas ministry.

My future wife, Cheryl, had felt the Lord calling her into missions since high school, so shortly after we got married in 1968 we began to actively seek the place where God would have us serve. UWM had the opportunity that we were looking for.

From 1973 to 1996 I taught MKs at Dakar Academy in Senegal. This has enabled missionaries from several countries in west Africa to stay on the field knowing that their children were receiving an excellent education in a Christian environment. Dakar Academy also serves non-Christian English-speakers living in Senegal. Many Muslim, Hindu, and Buddhist children have met the Lord while students at Dakar Academy.

Cheryl worked in women’s and children’s evangelism, as well as field hostess and treasurer.

Since returning to the States in 1996, we have been accompanying short-term teams traveling to Senegal from our U.S. church. Our church has adopted a village in Senegal and sends teams annually. We have provided water to the village, helped them build a little church, sent medical teams, and conducted basic Bible teaching seminars.

Currently, Cheryl serves in the Charlotte office in the area of Human Resources and connecting with all of our missionaries. Gene serves the mission through prayer ministry.

Pray Requests:

  • Pray for the new believers in our village – that their pastor will have wisdom in discipling them.
  • Pray that contextualized training will be available for the village pastor, and other new Christian Senegalese leaders.
  • Pray for strength and energy for us so that we will be able to go with our U.S. church teams in the years ahead.
